De. Longhi EC1. 55 Espresso Maker | Semi- Automatic. Porta filter issues. Review by Hanski. The only feedback about how an espresso shot will taste is the crèma. Crèma can be manipulated (as said many times in the SCG videos) by the grind settings, coffee quantity, tampering and type of coffee. However with the EC1. The small, pressurised porta filter on the EC1.
For real espresso lovers the pressurised porta filter will probably be a disappointment as I found out for myself. I think most De. Longhi machines come with this "improvement" that is not really an improvement at all. Full automatic machines can have exactly the same issues because they can't use coffee that is fine enough. This is a very Good Cappuccino maker, with just a couple of Mods, I get great Creama from this machine.

Review by Latte lover. I first got this machine I was very disappointed. However, after I played with it I was finally able to pull a good shot. First of all this machine requires very specific instructions to get good espresso.
I tried several types of coffee until I discovered "Lavazza" which worked very well, but this was not the only thing required. I then realized after reading some other reviews that it is very important to run at least 2 blank shot through 1st before adding your coffee. Also the tamp is very important as well (about 2. Another thing that will help is if you just leave the machine on all the time so that it is preheated all the time & ready for use. About the frother, it seems to work fairly well & is able to make some good foam (even with almond or coconut milk). With all this said, it seems that for the money this machine seems to be very good with some practice.

Review by Crema Queen! I've had two other espresso makers that start off making good crema which is of highest importance to me since I drink it straight up pure! The first 3 times it didn't work well and I was very disappointed but then it started producing excellent crema and makes a full Doppio espresso.
The Design is not my Favorite since I have to move the wand every time and it's so light it lifts up when I push it into place the plunger sticking down is useless as tamping down is much easier done with a seperate tamper so if they removed tamper then there would be room to seperate and easier to make each cup! Overall I am really enjoying my full crema cuppa every day! I am hoping it lasts!!!

Makes good espresso but drips . Coffee grounds are full of water when removing filter unit to empty, even after waiting 5 minutes. Posted on 8/3. 1/2. Review by Zippy. The sample I bought could not produce water temps at the brew head above 1. Temps would drop to 1. Of course, these temps produce undrinkable shots. I dialed in the grind so the total time of pulls was in the mid 2.
Hario Skerton (excellent grinder, and now I have Popeye arms), but the shots are clearly suffering from low water temps. I attempted several temp surfing techniques, and allowed longer warm up times, etc., but temps were still too low. All the tricks I know, from over 2. Pity, it would have been nice to pull shots for under a hundred bucks.
Posted on 8/2. 9/2. Review by Coffee enthusiast. The boyfriend and I have had this machine for over 3 months and we love it!
The only thing we wish was different was that it had an automatic safety shutoff as we have forgotten to turn of off before we leave the house in the morning. We also wish it would have come with a better tamper that was not attached to the machine.
However, we will be purchasing one separately. Other than that, the Keurig has been moved into storage and this is permanently on the kitchen counter. Posted on 7/2. 9/2. Excellent machine for the money. Review by Dan. I've had the machine since January and make 4 to 5 cups a week.
Like the girls said this machine makes a good smooth cup of espresso and the steamer is virtually fool proof just remember to lower the pitcher as the froth rises. I don't have a good espresso grinder so I normally use pre- ground coffee like Lav. Azza which the machine really likes, and I regularly get pucks unlike many of the reports of soupy grounds just enjoy your coffee first then clean the porta- filter. Another misconception with this machine is the tamper doesn't work. I purchased one because I felt I couldn't get a good 3. LB tamp with the one on the machine only to learn that you just need to flatten the coffee with very little pressure. Fluff the coffee (if your not using freshly ground) lightly fill the porta- filter level it off and use the tamp to flatten the coffee pressing lightly.
I like to fill the basket before putting it into the porta- filter then tamp holding the basket with my fingers and press using my thumbs on the top of the machines tamp. Now for the mysterious crema this machine can be very stingy with it but the fresher the coffee the more crema you'll get regardless you will get a great cup of espresso. My only complaint is that out of the box the steam knob was so tight I almost returned it, but it finally relented and opened. It has worked well ever since but I don't white knuckle it like they did.
Posted on 7/1. 8/2. Great for what it is. Review by novice espresso lover. I purchased this machine about 2 months ago and have used it to make 2- 3 drinks a day. I liked it so much I purchased another one for my vacation home. Unfortunately I got 2 duds in a row- both duds expelled steam and water(up to 3 oz) in the warm- up phase.
The machine should NOT lose any steam or water in that process. I was able to get another one that works properly and I am again pleased. Starbuck's brand espresso, ground on the turkish coffee setting, is still too course to get a good cup of espresso on this machine.
Medaglia D'Oro works much better. I have also had success with Fairway espresso ground at the espresso setting.
Both are flour- like. If I had a grinder I would try a little bit coarser grind but not by much. I get very good crema with both those coffees. The frother works great.
A few videos on you tube and some practice is all you need. Better to do the milk prior to pulling the shot so that the coffee is still fresh. This machine would be better for me if there was more height for the cups so that if I made a latte/macchiato I would not lose the crema when pouring from a shot glass. Also, I would like either more space under the frother to accommodate a larger pitcher or a frother that can tilt out. You can use a 1. 2oz pitcher but it must tilted slightly to get in and out. All in all it is a great machine for money.(Posted on 2/2. Not worth the time.
Review by Jennyjenjen. I am a barista and granted, I work on "commercial grade" machines normally. This machine squirts out water constantly in the steam wand, I can't get the espresso to come out faster than a drip no matter how I adjust or what grind I use. There is no quality crème on it and that's if I can actually get over an ounce of espresso. I got this as a gift for Christmas and will be trying to return it. Maybe I just need to get a French press at home. Very sad. (Posted on 2/4/2.
With a decent grinder and you can make some good stuff! Save $$Review by Rick. Stainless steel boiler takes away the lead concern. Posted on 1/3. 0/2. Great machine if you know how to use it. Review by Jimmer. First understand, any machine takes practice.
I used a Krups for 1. The De. Longi is much better. I bought this one used because the Krups died). Practice with different grinds. I use a local coffee shop to grind my beans (the same ones THEY use for espresso) and I have them grind it slightly less fine than what they use because this machine doesn't produce the bars of pressure that their commercial machine does. If it is too fine and the espresso struggles to come out, make the grind slightly more coarse until the machine likes it.
This De. Longhi accepts a finer grind than the Krups did. Have your local shop work with you in small batches until you find your grind. Then remember the setting! Skip the built- in tamper. It's awkward. I use a flat bottom coffee scoop for tamping. The steam wand is too long for easily fitting the cup with milk under it.
I get around this by placing the machine sideways at the edge of my kitchen counter so I can lower the cup more. When I'm done, I put the machine back by the backsplash. Easy. If you want to remove the filter basket soon after brewing for cleaning, SLOWLY pull the handle back to let the pressure release. Kind of like slowly opening the bottle of soda your buddy shook up before handing it to you. Bottom line, I love this machine. Makes much better lattes than my previous machine, probably due to the 1. Very rich crema and very effective steam wand for thick foam.
Awesome flavor! (Posted on 1/2. Review by Alan. Have used various grinds of coffee, followed the instructions, it never made a rich crema coffee is always weak very disappointing the only attribute to the machine it froths milk like crazy. In the future will consider almost any other brand. Posted on 1. 1/4/2.
